Détails: If you stand at the doors of your church to let worshippers in and out or if you assist in keeping order and decency in the sanctuary, this book is for you. If you are interested in the characteristics and qualities necessary to be a doorkeeper or usher in your church, this book is for you. This book provides important information about being a doorkeeper, as outlined in the Word of God. The focus of this book is on the spiritual characteristics of an effective doorkeeper. Some instructional rules are discussed, but this book uniquely connects the rules of courtesy with the responsibilities of a doorkeeper. The book also connects courtesy with the Word of God as stated in 1 Peter 3:8: “Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as bretheren, be pitiful, be courteous.” Whether doorkeeper, pastor, leader, or layperson in the church, this book will provide insight into the role of those who stand at the door of the house of the Lord.

Détails: Half a century ago, the primary contours of the history of the Jews in Roman times were not subject to much debate. This standard account collapsed, however, when a handful of insights undermined the traditional historical method, the method long enlisted by historians for eliciting facts from sources. In response to these insights, a new historical method gradually emerged. Rewriting Ancient Jewish History critiques the traditional historical method and makes a case for the new one, illustrating how to write anew ancient Jewish history. At the heart of the traditional historical method lie three fundamental presumptions. The traditional historical method regularly presumes that multiple versions of a text or tradition are equally authentic; it presumes that many ancient Jewish sources are the products of largely immanent forces of cloistered Jewish communities; and, barring any local grounds for suspicion, it presumes that most ancient Jewish texts faithfully reflect their sources and reliably recount events. Rewriting Ancient Jewish History unfurls the failings of this approach; it promotes the new historical method which circumvents the flawed traditional presumptions while plotting anew the limits of rational argumentation in historical inquiry. This crucial reappraisal is a must-read for students of Jewish and Roman history alike, and a fascinating case-study in how historians should approach their ancient sources.

Détails: What does it mean to think of Western Art music - and the Austro-German contribution to that repertory - as a tradition? How are men and masculinities implicated in the shaping of that tradition? And how is the writing of the history (or histories) of that tradition shaped by men and masculinities? This book seeks to answer these and other questions by drawing both on a wide range of German-language writings on music, sound and listening from the so-called long nineteenth century (circa 1800-1918), and a range of critical-theoretical texts from the post-war continental philosophical and psychoanalytic traditions, including Lacan, Zizek, Serres, Derrida and Kittler. The book is focussed in particular on bringing the object of historical writing itself into scrutiny by engaging in what Zizek has called a 'historicity' or a way of writing about the past that not merely acknowledges the ahistorical kernel of historical writing, but brings that kernel into the light of day, takes account of it and puts it into play. The book is thus committed to a kind of historical writing that is open-ended - though not ideologically naïve - and that does not fix or stabilize the nature of the relationship between so-called 'primary' and 'secondary' texts. The book consists of an introduction, which places the study of classical music and the Austro-German tradition within broader debates about the value of that tradition, and four extensive case studies: an analysis of the cultural-historical category of listening around 1800; a close reading of A. B. Marx's Beethoven monograph of 1859; a consideration of Heinrich Schenker's attitudes to the mob and the vernacular more broadly and an examination, through Franz Kafka, of the figure of Mahler's body.

Détails: 'In recent decades, interest in hunger artists has greatly diminished.' Kafka published two collections of short stories in his lifetime, A Country Doctor: Little Tales (1919) and A Hunger Artist: Four Stories (1924). Both collections are included in their entirety in this edition, which also contains other, uncollected stories and a selection of posthumously published works that have become part of the Kafka canon. Enigmatic, satirical, often bleakly humorous, these stories approach human experience at a tangent: a singing mouse, an ape, an inquisitive dog, and a paranoid burrowing creature are among the protagonists, as well as the professional starvation artist. A patient seems to be dying from a metaphysical wound; the war-horse of Alexander the Great steps aside from history and adopts a quiet profession as a lawyer. Fictional meditations on art and artists, and a series of aphorisms that come close to expressing Kafka's philosophy of life, further explore themes that recur in his major novels. Newly translated, and with an invaluable introduction and notes, Kafka's short stories are haunting and unforgettable. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Détails: Controversial erosions of individual liberties in the name of anti-terrorism are ongoing in liberal democracies. The focus of this book is on the manner in which strategic discourse has been used to create accepted political narratives. It specifically links aspects of that discourse to problematic and evolving terrorism detention practices that happen outside of traditional criminal and wartime paradigms, with examples including the detentions at Guantanamo Bay and security certificates in Canada. This book suggests that biased political discourse has, in some respects, continued to fuel public misconceptions about terrorism, which have then led to problematic legal enactments, supported by those misconceptions. It introduces this idea by presenting current examples, such as some of the language used by US President Donald Trump regarding terrorism, and it argues that such language has supported questionable legal responses to terrorism. It then critiques political arguments that began after 9/11, many of which are still foundational as terrorism detention practices evolve. The focus is on language emanating from the US, and the book links this language to specific examples of changed detention practices from the US, Canada, and the UK. Terrorism is undoubtedly a real threat, but that does not mean that all perceptions of how to respond to terrorism are valid. As international terrorism continues to grow and to change, this book offers valuable insights into problems that have arisen from specific responses, with the objective of avoiding those problems going forward.

Détails: In this jarring look at contemporary warfare and political visuality, renowned anthropologist of violence Allen Feldman provocatively argues that contemporary sovereign power mobilizes asymmetric, clandestine, and ultimately unending war as a will to truth. Whether responding to the fantasy of weapons of mass destruction or an existential threat to civilization, Western political sovereignty seeks to align justice, humanitarian right, and democracy with technocratic violence and visual dominance. Connecting Guantánamo tribunals to the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, American counterfeit killings in Afghanistan to the Baader-Meinhof paintings of Gerhard Richter, and the video erasure of Rodney King to lynching photography and political animality, among other scenes of terror, Feldman contests sovereignty’s claims to transcendental right —whether humanitarian, neoliberal, or democratic—by showing how dogmatic truth is crafted and terror indemnified by the prosecutorial media and materiality of war. Excavating a scenography of trials—formal or covert, orchestrated or improvised, criminalizing or criminal—Feldman shows how the will to truth disappears into the very violence it interrogates. He maps the sensory inscriptions and erasures of war, highlighting war as a media that severs factuality from actuality to render violence just. He proposes that war promotes an anesthesiology that interdicts the witness of a sensory and affective commons that has the capacity to speak truth to war. Feldman uses layered deconstructive description to decelerate the ballistical tempo of war to salvage the embodied actualities and material histories that war reduces to the ashes of collateral damage, the automatism of drones, and the opacities of black sites. The result is a penetrating work that marries critical visual theory, political philosophy, anthropology, and media archeology into a trenchant dissection of emerging forms of sovereignty and state power that war now makes possible.

Détails: What is the relationship between justice and mercy? This is not merely a speculative question; it goes to the heart of many of our activities as human beings in both our personal and social relationships. How can I live with my fellow human beings in ways that are both just and merciful? The Beatitude of Mercy is a meditative exploration of this question. While it recognizes the importance of social justice--as a mutual indebtedness--it argues that without social mercy, even justice itself cannot save us. Mercy is not a countermeasure or complement to justice; rather, mercy "watches over justice." Mercy does not seek to thwart or deny justice's rightful claims, but to ensure that our practices of justice are never conducted solely according to calculation and measurement, but are also weighed or motivated by mercy and love.

Détails: “This book will serve as a modern-day epistle to those in revival and those seeking it. Kim is a doorkeeper. She does not just know about revival but has experienced it firsthand.” — John Kilpatrick, pastor Church of His Presence, Pastor of the Brownsville Revival, Pensacola, FL “Jesus is coming back for a church in revival!” — Kim Owens Revival was never meant to come and go, ebb and flow. In fact, it’s not God Who taps out of revival; it’s us. Heaven’s desire is a church that’s burning with passion, alive with the Spirit, and flowing with the supernatural. What if it were possible to actually sustain moves of the Holy Spirit in churches, cities and regions? While many are waiting around for a sovereign outpouring of God to come down from Heaven, there is a remnant of believers rising in the Earth who are declaring war on dry places and dead spiritual atmospheres. Many claim to desire revival, but few are willing to keep the door open for the move of God to continue and increase! Sustained revival is doing what it takes, no matter how long it takes, to keep the door of revival open and the fire of God burning on the altar. Kim Owens is pastor of Fresh Start Church, a thriving church in Peoria Arizona that has been experiencing sustained revival since 2015. It’s not extended services or special meetings that characterizes this revival. It’s far more transferable and applicable to you! Pastor Kim has simply given her life to training everyday believers to live as powerful, Holy Spirit-empowered revivalists. In Doorkeepers of Revival, you will learn how to: Press into God, refusing to settle for a passive, substandard Christianity. Create space for the Holy Spirit to move, accommodating Him above everything else. Cross thresholds into new realms of glory, learning how to seize and steward key moments of Holy Spirit outpouring. Follow the Upper Room strategy, prioritizing the power of Pentecost over programs. Sustained revival is not only what the Lord desires, but it’s what most Christians and church leaders desire. Even more so, it’s what the world needs to see: a church ablaze with Holy Spirit fire!

Détails: Derrida wrote a vast number of texts for particular events across the world, as well as a series of works that portray him as a voyager. As an Algerian émigré, a postcolonial outsider, and an idiomatic writer who felt tied to a language that was not his own, and as a figure obsessed by the singularity of the literary or philosophical event, Derrida emerges as one whose thought always arrives on occasion. But how are we to understand the event in Derrida? Is there a risk that such stories of Derrida's work tend to misunderstand the essential unpredictability at work in the conditions of his thought? And how are we to reconcile the importance in Derrida of the unknowable event, the pull of the singular, with deconstruction's critical and philosophical rigour and its claims to rethink more systematically the ethico-political field. This book argues that this negotiation in fact allows deconstruction to reformulate the very questions that we associate with ethical and political responsibility and shows this to be the central interest in Derrida's work.

Détails: This book is about my novel, North Window. I wrote it between 2010 and 2015. I have written four novels in total and North Window is my third. I had a job, family and a house. My life couldn’t seem more ordinary. I had been writing stories since my early teens and thought nothing of it. This story seemed to bear no relevance to my life at all. Insomniac, Luke has two lives. By day, he is drafting documents between corporations; by night, he pays to watch erotica from his apartment window. But one performer rues the day she took the commission. Who is this client she works for? And why does the night bring unease when her voyeur takes his post within the shadows? A year after completing this novel, I learned something truly terrible about myself. Unbeknown to me, clues to this horrific truth had leaked into my stories, paintings, poems and other creations. I have since discovered an undercurrent to this novel. This undercurrent was rendered invisible to the one I believed I was writing. My novels are not strictly novels at all, but something sinister. The dictionary lacks a word for what they really are. As this is a true story, I have used my diaries as part of this account. Illustrations are provided in order to convey the intensity of my inner world. One word of note: Dispel all preconceptions about this novel. The story is nothing like what it appears.

Détails: A superficial reader may well think that the books of Chronicles are the supplement of the books of Samuel and Kings. The Jews indeed have attributed this character to them since ancient times. Christians have done the same with regard to the three synoptic Gospels; they think that the Gospels of Mark and of Luke complete Matthew's account of the Lord's life. In reality the Chronicles, like these Gospels, present the thoughts of God from a completely new aspect. They present the kingship in a very important dimension, which these pages aim to bring out. In relation to this subject, one or two preliminary remarks will be useful. We have insisted, in other Meditations, (Meditations on the Books of Samuel and Kings, by H. Rossier.) upon the prophetic origin and bearing of the books of Samuel and Kings. The Chronicles do not have the same character although, remarkably, we continually find in them the activity of the prophets. Even the Jews did not count them among the prophetic books, to which the majority of the books of history belong, but rather classified them among the “holy writings” headed by the Psalms.

Détails: When the young salesman Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning transformed into a monstrous insect, his shock and incomprehension are coupled with the panic of being late for work and having to reveal his appearance to family and colleagues. Although over the following weeks he gradually becomes used to this new existence confined within the bounds of the apartment, and his parents and sister adapt to living with a grotesque bug, Gregor notices that their attitudes towards him are changing and he feels increasingly alienated. One of the masterpieces of twentieth-century world literature, 'The Metamorphosis' is accompanied in this volume by a selection of other classic tales and sketches by Kafka - such as 'The Judgement', 'In the Penal Colony' and 'A Country Doctor' - all presented in a lively and meticulous new translation by Christopher Moncrieff.

Détails: Servants of Diplomacy offers a bottom-up history of the 19th-century Foreign Office and in doing so, provides a ground-breaking study of modern British diplomacy. Whilst current literature focuses on the higher echelons of the Office, Keith Hamilton sheds a new light on the administrative and social history of Whitehall which have, until now, been largely ignored. Hamilton's examination of the roles and actions of the Foreign Office's domestic staff is exhaustive, with close attention paid to: the keepers of the office, keepers of the papers, the carriers of the papers and the efforts made to adapt to growing technological changes. Hamilton's exhaustive analysis also focuses on the reforms of 1905-06 and the Queen's Messengers during wartime. Drawing extensively from Foreign Office and Treasury archives and private manuscript collections, this is essential reading for anyone with an interest of British diplomatic history.

Détails: The new millennium can only be a time of true globalization if different histories and systems of understanding the world are appreciated. The authors unveil significant studies to do with epistemological debates in International Relations, and give detailed middle and far-eastern examples of how different cultures have used story-telling as a means of understanding what is outside and around. Especially provocative is the Chinese idea of the West as an 'Other', as atypical and, indeed, inscrutable, to the extent of not needing scrutiny at all.

Détails: he Syriac Version of Ezra-Nehemiah seems to be based on an original Hebrew text that is partly different from the one transmitted in the Masoretic tradition. This study seeks explain how the Syriac translator understood the Hebrew text. The author firstly examines the manuscript traditions and provides a critical apparatus to the Syriac text. He then investigates the translation technique and shows the translator’s efforts to solve the difficulties in the original by offering a more coherent and clearer new text. This monograph also discusses questions concerning the translator and his community. In sum, the Syriac version constitutes a stimulus and a call to read the Old Testament afresh. «Despite the fact that the Syriac version of the book of Ezra and Nehemiah presents some notable differences in comparison with the Hebrew Text, there has been no exhaustive research on this book». «The history of the research has shown the persistence of certain opinions which a more careful analysis has demonstrated to be problematic. As this point, we can put forward two presuppositions of our research: in the history of the canon does not allow us to make deductions as to the history of its translation and transmission». «From the rhetorical point of view, we have recognised various phenomena which can be summarised in a few words: the translation provides a clearer and more consistent presentation of the original Hebrew, even at the cost of sacrificing some redundant expressions of the Vorlage, but with the aim of producing a well-ordered arrangement of the text by means of the technique of repetition».
