Détails: A timeless and celebrated children’s classic, Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows has delighted for nearly 100 years. In the idyllic English countryside, Mole, Badger, Rat and Toad encounter adventure at every turn—whether it’s gipsy caravans, Rat’s love for the river, or Toads passion for motorcars, the loveable friends and their escapades continue to delight children and adults alike. The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality, and camaraderie and celebrated for its evocation of the nature of the Thames valley. With the arrival of spring and fine weather outside, the good-natured Mole loses patience with spring cleaning. He flees his underground home, emerging to take in the air and ends up at the river, which he has never seen before. Here he meets new friends like the Water Rat and Mr Toad. Toad is rich, but conceited. His motorcar obsession drives him into big trouble.

White have assembled a collection of essays that look at the book in terms of class, gender and nationality, as well as its construction of heteronormative masculinity, the very English novel's appeal to Chinese readers, and the meaning of a text in which animals can be human-like, pets, servants, and even food.

Détails: Josephine Baker: captivating performer, political activist and international icon, who lived from 1906 to 1975. From the ragtime rhythms of St Louis and the intoxicating sounds of 1920s Paris, to present-day London, Josephine and I intertwines the story of a modern-day girl with that of one of the greatest, yet largely forgotten, stars of the twentieth century. Cush Jumbo stars in the premiere of her debut play, which centres on the legendary American entertainer and her impact on a contemporary young woman. Live music combines with dance to bring to life the contemporary legacy of a woman Ernest Hemingway described as "the most sensational woman anyone ever saw, and ever will."

Détails: Richard Hughes's celebrated short novel is a masterpiece of concentrated narrative. Its dreamlike action begins among the decayed plantation houses and overwhelming natural abundance of late nineteenth-century Jamaica, before moving out onto the high seas, as Hughes tells the story of a group of children thrown upon the mercy of a crew of down-at-the-heel pirates. A tale of seduction and betrayal, of accommodation and manipulation, of weird humor and unforeseen violence, this classic of twentieth-century literature is above all an extraordinary reckoning with the secret reasons and otherworldly realities of childhood.

Détails: After more than two years on the bestseller lists and over four million copies in print, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel of enormous contemporary relevance. A Thousand Splendid Suns is a breathtaking story set against the volatile events of Afghanistan’s last thirty years—from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban to post-Taliban rebuilding—that puts the violence, fear, hope, and faith of this country in intimate, human terms. It is a tale of two generations of characters brought jarringly together by the tragic sweep of war, where personal lives—the struggle to survive, raise a family, find happiness—are inextricable from the history playing out around them. Propelled by the same storytelling instinct that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once a remarkable chronicle of three decades of Afghan history and a deeply moving account of family and friendship. It is a striking, heart-wrenching novel of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love—a stunning accomplishment.

Détails: The final volume of The L.M. Montgomery Reader, A Legacy in Review examines a long overlooked portion of Montgomery’s critical reception: reviews of her books. Although Montgomery downplayed the impact that reviews had on her writing career, claiming to be amused and tolerant of reviewers’ contradictory opinions about her work, she nevertheless cared enough to keep a large percentage of them in scrapbooks as an archive of her career. Edited by leading Montgomery scholar Benjamin Lefebvre, this volume presents more than four hundred reviews from eight countries that raise questions about and offer reflections on gender, genre, setting, character, audience, and nationalism, much of which anticipated the scholarship that has thrived in the last four decades. Lefebvre’s extended introduction and chapter headnotes place the reviews in the context of Montgomery’s literary career and trace the evolution of attitudes to her work, and his epilogue examines the reception of Montgomery’s books that were published posthumously. A comprehensive account of the reception of Montgomery’s books, published during and after her lifetime, A Legacy in Review is the illuminating final volume of this important new resource for L.M. Montgomery scholars and fans around the world.

Détails: Capture the fantasy, thrills, and far-flung adventure of the first three novels in Terry Brooks’s enchanting Magic Kingdom of Landover series—now for the first time in one gripping volume. Chicago lawyer Ben Holiday can’t fathom what lies ahead when he purchases Landover—a magical kingdom of chivalry and sorcery—from Meeks, the mysterious seller who placed the ad. Weary and jaded, Ben clings to the ad’s promise: “Escape into your dreams.” But Landover is not the enchanted idyll he expected. The kingdom is in ruin. The barons refuse to recognize Ben as King, a dragon is decimating the countryside, and a demon lord has challenged any prospective ruler to a fatal duel. To make matters worse, the Paladin, renowned champion of the Kings of Landover, seems to be merely a legend. Ben’s only allies are a bumbling court magician, a talking dog turned court scribe, and the beautiful Willow, who is part girl, part tree. With his friends in tow, Ben sets out to claim the throne. But when Meeks decides he wants Landover back, Ben will face supernatural foes of every stripe to prove himself worthy of the kingship. The question is: Can he survive?

Détails: Over 175 years ago George Catlin, American painter, writer and explorer, realized that the white settlers would eventually destroy the native cultures of North America. Devoting his life to preserving the Indian heritage, he traveled throughout the West sketching and painting hundreds of Indian portraits, village scenes, religious rituals and games. Eager to preserve the vanishing tribes and customs of the Native Americans through his art, his encounters with these fascinating people resulted in the book, The North American Indians, a collection of his letters with over 400 illustrations. Catlin toured Europe for eight years presenting his famous collection of portraits and sketches. As a result of this tour, Catlin published ADVENTURES OF THE OJIBBEWAY AND IOWAY INDIANS concentrating on these two intriguing tribes in this two-volume set.

Détails: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, LMU Munich, language: English, abstract: Having been published in 1908, a time of social unrest, anarchy and revolution in England (Carpenter 1985, 165), The Wind in the Willows is now over one hundred years old and has become a canonical and popular work of literature, beloved by adults and children alike. The plot of the novel is based on two interlocked narratives: the Bildungsroman of Mole, who is initiated into the well-established, domestic society of the River-Bankers and the story of the adventurous, over-excessive, nouveau-riche Toad who is brought to reason by his friends in the end. The values of the dusty highway and the wide world are contrasted with the warmth of the homely riverbank so that preferences among the audience are inclined to emerge. Mendelson (1988, 127) declares that adults tend to prefer the coziness of the riverbank and the fellowship between Mole, Rat and Badger and that children on the other hand love the adventures of Toad. In contrast to the reality in Britain at the time of the novel's publishing, the world of the River-Bankers is an idyllic bachelors' Arcadia free of sorrows, death and sex. It represents an insulated society that is protected from the Wide World and has its own unquestioned hierarchical social arrangements. However, as Carpenter states it, “there is little evidence that Grahame took [this] kind of interest in current social events“, even though Peter Green (in his biography of Kenneth Grahame) argues that the story has “an unmistakable social symbolism” (Carpenter, 165). He is inclined to see it as accidental coloring acquired because of the time the novel was written in rather than the author's specific purpose. As it is a very complex piece of literature, many different readings as well as interpretations exist, not only with regard to underlying second meanings.
